A Survey on the Smoking Habits in Korea, 1980

Abstract

Cigarette smoking behaviours of those aged 15 years or more have been examined in the light of the responses of 15,594 persons by the questionnaire survey in 1980. The percentages of smoking in male and female were 69.6% and 11. 0% respectively. Some differences in smoking behaviour were found between urban and rural areas. In the age groups of 40 years or more, there were more smokers in both sexes in rural areas than those in urban areas. And the males started to smoke at an earlier age than did females. While 83.6% of male smokers started to smoke before the age of 25, 77.4% of female smokers had started to smoke at age of 30 years or more. In regard to the average number of cigarettes smoked daily, current smokers consumed 14.4 cigarettes and ex-smokers consumed 14.5 cigarettes. The complaints of cough with sputum and shortness of breath revealed 54.2% among ex-smokers and current smokers. The respiratory symtoms were closely associated with the number of cigarettes smoked per day and smoking duration. The average smoking duration among ex-smoking was 17.2 years.
