Bronchofiberscopic Study of Bronchial Branching Patterns of Both Upper Lung and the Method of their Nomenclature

Abstract

Bronchofiberscopic evaluation of both upper lung bronchopulmonary segmental branching pattern was performed in 100 subjects who admitted to Seoul National University hospital during the period of January 1985 to April 1985. The results are summarized as follows with the review of the nomenclature method of both mid- and lower lung bronchial branching patterns. 1) Right upper lobe bronchial branching pattern showed 8 kinds of pattern with the prevalence of Y-type: 29. 9%, B1, B2+3: 17%, B1+2, B3 type: 17 %, inverted Y-type: 16%, respectively . 2) For naming the right upper lobe segmental and subsegmental opening, the identification of RB2a, as a landmark point, is considered most objective. 3) Left upper lobe branching patterns showed B1+2a+b, c, B3a,b + c : 49.4 %, B1+2a + b,B1+2C, B3a,b+c: 35%, B1+2a +b, B3: 8.9 %, respectively. 4) For naming the left upper lobe segmental and subsegmental opening, the identification of LB1+2a, as a landmark, is considered most objective method. 5) The objective method of nomenclature of Right middle lobe, Right lower lobe, Left lingular lobe and left lower lobe were summarized and formulated as a proposed method.
