Gallium67-Scan in Intrathoracic Staging of Primary Lung Cancer

Abstract

Evaluation of mediastinal metastasis in patients with primary bronchogenic carcinoma is important in determening therapeutic plan. Gallium67 -scan was prospectively compared as noninvasive means of evaluating mediastinal metastasis in 20 patients in whom surgical and histologic evaluations of mediastinum were performed. Except one case of which histologic diagnosis was bronchioloalveolar cell carcinoma, all primary tumors showed uptake of Gallium67(uptake rate of primary tumor; 95%). In 19 patients who showed uptake of primary tumor 5 patinets had false negative scan in evaluating mediastinal invasion but false positive scan was absent. These results indicate a sensitivity of 58%, a specificity of 100%, an accuracy of 58% for negative scan and an accuracy of 100% for positive scan. These data indicate that Gallium67 -scan is useful noninvasive method for determining operability in primary bronchogenic carcinoma.
