Alterations in Oximetric SaO2 and Pulse during Routine Bronchofiberscopy

Abstract

Bronchofiberscopy is a well known diagnostic procedure in the bronchopulmonary disease. Among the complications of bronchofiberscopy, frequent hypoxemia has been noted. Instead of arterial blood gas analysis, noninvasive oximetric monitoring of Sa02 was performed in 19 patients before, during and after diagnostic bronchofiberscopy. Of 19 cases, 7 cases (37%) presented significant hypoxemia (Sa02< 90%), and 3 of them required oxygen inhalation. The heart rate was significantly increased during bronchial washing Of 19 cases, 4 cases (21 %) revealed significant bradycardia (heart rate < 50). In conclusion, the oximetry was a useful noninvasive instrument used to monitor patients during routine bronchofiberscopic examination
