Paragonimus Empyema: Report of Four Cases

Abstract

Empyema is diagnosed by the presence of pus in the pleural aspirate or positive bacterial culture of the pleural fluid. But the etiologic agent may not be found in spite of various diagnostic methods Pleuro-pulmonary paragonimiasis can be easily overlooked by physicians who do not suspect this disease in the differential diagnoses. We repoπ four cases of paragonimus empyema which were confirmed by demonstration of ova in the pleural fluid in one case and presence of antibody by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and clinical improvement by administration of praziquantel in other cases. Diagnostic implication was discussed with review of the literatures.
