Changes of Serum Neutrophil Chemotactic Factor (NCF) Level and Basophil Count after the Exercise Test in Exercise-Induced Asthma

Abstract

Twenty-One cases of asthmatics and six cases of control subjects ranging in age from 6 to 15 years underwent pulmonary function tests and venous blood samplings for the NCF and basophil count before and after the free-running exercise for 8 minutes to detect the relationship between NCF activity, basophil count and exercise-induced asthma (EIA). 1) In the EIA (+) asthmatic patients, FEV 1 (75.1 ± 15.3%), PEFR (65.5 ± 14.0%), and MMF (62.0 ± 13.0%) were markedly decreased at 8 min after the exercise but they returned to pre-exercise level at 30 min after the exercise. In EIA (-) asthmatic patients, lung functions were only slightly reduced (FEV: 93 .3 ± 3.2 %, MMF: 88.1:t 9.0% , PEFR 91.4 ± 7.7%) at 8 min after the exerise. And in the control group, no significant changes were found. 2) In the EIA (+) asthmatic patients the serum NCF activites began to increase immediately after the exercise, and they reached to peak at 7 minutes. They were significantly elevated until one hour after the exercise. But in the EIA (- ) asthmatics and control group, no significant changes in the serum NCF activities were noted. 3) In all groups, blood basophil counts were significantly increased immediately after the exercise. At 7 minutes after the exercise, they retumed to pre-exercise level in the control group and EIA ( - ) asthma patients, but in EIA (+) group the basophil counts were persistently high. 4) Serums containing NCF had both chemotactic (directed migration) and chemokinetic (random migration) effect. In conclusion, above findings suggest that mast-cell-associated mediaors of hypersensitivity like NCF are released by the exercise in exercise-mediated asthmatic patients.
