Observation of Cardiac Arrhythmias in Hospitalized Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease by 24-Hour Continuous Ambulating Electrocardiographic Recording

Abstract

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are considered to be at increased risk of sudden. presumably arrhythmia-related. death. The course of the arrhythmias and their contribution to the morbidity and mortality of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is yet known. To evaluate cardiac arrhythmias and corduction disturbarces in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the results of 24-hour continuous electrocardiographic monitoring on 13 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were reviewed. Clinically significant aπhythmias were observed in 8 patients (62%). The frequency of each arrhythmia was followed as supraventricular ectopic beats, ventricular ectopic beats and then supraventricular tachycardia. Occurrence of cardiac arrhythmias was most frequent between 1: 00 AM and 6:00 AM.
