Abstract

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the number of confirmed cases and deaths is again increasing rapidly. Although the SARS-CoV-2 virus has not been reported to cause direct blood transfusion-transmitted infections, it has reduced the number of blood donors and increased the time and workforce required at blood donation centers. In addition, the blood donor population has been decreasing because of the aging population and the low birth rate. It is now necessary to utilize patient blood management for blood transfusions to reduce blood consumption and stabilize a safe blood supply.
