Abstract

Primary care physicians should not overlook commonly encountered foot pain and foot diseases, whose optimal diagnosis and treatment can be missed. Ankle sprains comprise 20% of all sports-related injuries encountered in the emergency department. Foot pain can be divided into forefoot, midfoot, and heel pain. Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain; however, fracture and calcaneal synovitis should also be considered. Metatarsal sprain is the most common cause of midfoot pain, but navicular fracture should be differentiated. Finally, gout, sprain, and nail problems are common causes of forefoot pain.
