Abstract

Purpose
The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of a Korean version of the Psychological Adaptation Scale (K-PAS) for patients on hemodialysis.
Methods
The PAS was translated into Korean with the forward and backward translation method. The data were collected from 171 patients on hemodialysis at eight general hospitals in South Korea. Content, construct, criterion validity were evaluated. Cronbach's ⍺ coefficients were used to examine the scale’s reliability. Jamovi 1.1.9 software was used for data analysis.
Results
The K-PAS consists of 15 items in four domains, including coping efficacy, self-esteem, social integration, and spiritual well-being. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis of the K-PAS showed good fitness and reliability (x2 = 235.00 (p<.001), df=84, normed x2=2.79, root mean square error of approximation=.10, comparative fit index=.92, Tucker-Lewis index=.90). The K-PAS was significantly correlated with depression (r=-.32, p<.001), social support (r=.32, p<.001), and quality of life (r=.46, p<.001). Internal consistency, depicted by Cronbach's ⍺, was .94 for the total scale and ranged from .82 to .90 for all subscales.
Conclusion
The K-PAS is a valid and reliable measure to assess psychological adaptation in patients on hemodialysis. Owing to its simplicity and ease of use, it may also prove to be a good assessment tool for psychological adaptation in the context of other chronic diseases.
