Clinical Evaluation of the Swallowing
Abstract
- Swallowing disorder is a common problem seen in patients undergoing treatment for cancer, stroke and neurodegenerative illnesses. The evaluation of swallowing disorder currently uses a variety of methods. The most common dichotomy is between instrumental and noninstrumental or clinical evaluation. The clinical swallowing evaluation often is considered as the first line of assessment. This type of evaluation may provide key information regarding the patient's eating behavior, language, cognition, and oromotor function. This article will provide information concerning the available methods of clinical swallowing assessment.
