Supracondylar Fracture of the Humerus in Children: Case report of cases

Abstract

This is to present the short term result of treatment of 16 condylar fractures in children among those 13 being supra-condylar, two lateral and one medial condylar fractures. In treating 13 supracondylar fractures, 11 cases obtained accurate anatomical reduction following single attempt of close reduction under general anesthesia. Plaster immobilization in hyperflexion of elbow was sufficient in obtaining favorable results. Remainder of two cases underwent open reduction. Open reduction was indicated in which the initial atempt of closed reduction failed to obtain acceptable reduction, owing to soft tissue interposition in fracture site and extremely unstable fracture in supracondylar fractures. In the cases with medial and lateral condylar fractures, open method was mandatory because of avulsion force exerted by muscles originated from the fracture site. In follow-up, undisirable complication was not observed. Range of motion in the cases with open reduction attained full range. In selective cases with condylar fracture, open reduction should be a treatment of choice.
