Fractures of the Talus: Report of 22 cases

Abstract

The management of the fractures of the talus poses considerable difficulty to the orthopedic surgery today. Clinical observation was made on the 22 cases of fractures of the talus treated at the Department of Ortho pedic Surgery of the 77th Army Hospital during the 4-year period, frcm 1964 to 1967. All 14 simple fractures with no displacement or no other demonstrable lesions resulted in satisfactory healing regardless of treatment, while the remaining 8 cases with dislocations, communicatians, and combined fractures of calcaneus or peritalar bones eventually resulted in prolonged healing time with poor functional recovery. We believe the prognosis depends not so much on the type of treatment installed subsequently as on the type of injuries with presence of associated damage to adjaeent structures.
