A Clinical Study of the Patellar Fracture

Abstract

Recently the fracture of patella has increasing tendency due to frequent traffic and industrial accidents. In this series, we treated 141 fractures of patella from January, 1980 to November, 1988 at the Department of Orthopedic surgery, Seoul Paik Hospital, Inje University, and obtained following re sults: 1. Peak age was third to fifth decades. 2. The most common cause of fracture was traffic accident. 3. Comminuted fracture was the most common type in this series. 4. Men predominate in a ratio of nearly 7:l. 5. 101 cases were treated with Modified Tension Band Wiring(41 cases), Tenison Band Wiring (21 cases), Partial Patellectomy(21 cases), Total Patellectomy(9 cases), Circumferential Wiring (9 cases). 6. The most favorable results were obtained by Modified Tension Band Wiring method as compared with other fixation techniques.
