Abstract

Although obesity is increasing steadily and the public awareness of metabolic and bariatric surgery is improving in Korea, there are currently no Korean guideline for surgical treatment of obesity. The Korean Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery organized a Guideline Committee for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Experts from related fields developed guidelines de novo to meet Korean circumstances and requirements, including 59 recommendation statements for preoperative work-up and surgery. The committee analyzed all available studies and previous guidelines regarding metabolic and bariatric surgery, including studies on Asian patients. All statements provide their evidence levels and recommendation grades. A review of the guidelines was also conducted during the finalization phase.
