Lymph nodes with central low density in postenhanced abdominal C-T scan

Abstract

It is well recognized that the lymph node in matastasis or tuberculosis is frequently accompained with centralnecrosis or caseation necrosis, but occasionally in lymphoma. We experienced 43 cases of lymphadenopathy whichshowed cental low density on postenhanced abdominal CT scan from Jan. 1985 to Mar. 1987. 1. During that period,338 cases showed abdominal lymphadenopathy in CT scan. Among them, 43 cases showed central low denisty onpostenhanced scan (12.7%). In 43 cases, there were 31 cases of metastasis, 8 cases of lymphoma and 4 cases oftuberculosis. 2. Central low density was observed in 80.0%(4/5) of tuberculosis, 38.1%(8/21) of lymphoma and10.0%(31/312) of metastasis. 3. The pattern of contrast enhancement of lymph node was divided in 5 types as thinrim, thick rim, eccentric low density, multiple low densities and septated types. Thick rim type was the mostcommon pattern of enhancement. The pattern was variable in lymphoma. In tubercuulosis, only thin or thick rimtypes were observed. Septated type was only observed in metastatic tumors.
