Three-dimensional computed tomography in craniofacial pathology

Abstract

From November 1988 to May 1989, 3-D CT examinations have been performed in 33 patients in department ofRadiology of Kan Nam Sacred Heart Hospital. They consisted of 24 cases of craniofacial trauma, 6 cases of tumor, 2cases of craniosynostosis and 1 case of surgical bone defect. We retrospectively evaluated 3-D CT findings and itsclinical utility, and presented 4 representative cases. In majority of cases, we could more easily understand therelationship of normal to abnormal structures and the overall configuration of deformed craniofacial bone. Inaddition, inspection of the reproduced structures could be made from any view point, even from internal viewpoint. 3-D CT alone was less effective in detection of undisplaced fracture and in evaluation of the fractureinvolving the lateral wall of ethmoid sinus. It is considered that 3-D CT is a valuable adjunct in the evaluationof craniofacial bone pathology.
