Automatic coding method of the ACR code

Abstract
- The authors developed a computer program for automation of the coding by ACR( Ammeriican College of Radiology)code. The automatic coding can reduce radiologist's burden and make more accurate coding possible in most of thesituation. This program used IBM PC AT and was written in dBASE III plus language. We established the ACRdictionary as followings: procedure code= 'ACR 32', anatomy code= "-761' , pathology code= '3121/7' The codes wereautomatically established while the results were typewritten. Uncoded diagnosis was remained into 28 digits. Allof the searching were performed by index file, with which searching time is negligible regardless of the filesize. This program is useful in filing of the personal data or teaching materials. However, more complexprocedures should be added for automation of routine work in the department of radiology.
