Preoperative transfemoral cerebral embolization of malignant meningioma

Abstract

The authors report a case of hypervascuar malignant menigioma in which, to reduce operative bleeding and facilitate operative procedure, feeder branches of the external carotid artery were preoperatively embolized with Geloam plugs. Using TORCON femoral-cerebral catheter, we found typical malignant meningioma by right transfemoralcarotid angiography and the vessels feeding the tumor were satisfactorily embolized with Gelfoam(8mm3 in size)suspended in normal saline solution under fluoroscopic visualization. Embolizations were confirmed by follow-upangiography. We consider that preoperative embolization of hypervascular tumor is effective in preventing operative hemorrhage and make possible surgical extirpation of a tumor mass. As far as we know, preoperative transfemoral embolization of malignant brain tumor has not been reported in Korea.
