The Past and Future of Geriatric Psychiatry

Abstract

Recently the population of old age people are very rapidly increasing in the world, and growing interest in the area of prevention, treatment and rehabilitaion of elderly mental health has been a catalyst for academic research in geriatric psychiatry since the last quater of the 20th century. The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology administered the examination for a certificate of added qualifications in geriatric psychiatry in April of 1991. The Korean Association for Geriatric Psychiatry was founded in 1994 in Korea, and the number of KGPA member has been very rapidly increasing since 1994, the founding year of KGPA. At this point of time, it is of great significance to review the history of geriatric psychiatry, especially the history of KGPA, and to think about the future of geriatric psychiatry in Korea.
