Normal Predicted Value of Airway Resistance by Flow Interrupter Technique in Korean Middle School-Aged Children

Abstract

BACKGROUND
The measurement of airway resistance by interrupter technique is easier than that by plathysmography. We already published normal predicted value of airway resistance by flow interrupter technique in preschool and school children.
OBJECTIVE
We performed this study to get the normal predicted value of airway resistance in Korean middle school-aged children, using flow interrupter technique. METHODS: Subjects were 121 (Male 63, Female 58) middle school students. One medical doctor, well trained to the Microlab 4000 (Micromedical Co. England) educated the children before check and carried out all the procedure. We obtained mean, standard deviation, regression equation, correlation coefficient in every age, height group, every weight group, and every chest circumference group in both sexes. RESULTS: The airway resistance (Rint) decreased as the children become older or taller. As increase of weight and chest circumference, the Rint decreased in boys, but it did not change in girls. We obtained regression equations and correlation coefficient by variables in both genders. The rint was well correlated with age and height but correlation coefficient was less than 0.5. CONCLUSION: We obtained the normal predicted value of airway resistance by flow interrupter technique. It can be used in the evaluation of lung condition including diagnosis and follow-up of lung disease.
