Urofolwmetry in the Female Voiding Difficulties
Abstract
-
PURPOSE: We attempted to investigate how helpful the routine use of uroflowmetry is for better understanding women with voiding difficulties, but without urinary tract infection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Seventeen consecutive female patients with voiding difficulties were studied with uroflowmetry and synchronous electromyography (EMG) of the external urethral sphincter (EUS), and twenty women without any voiding symptoms, as a control group, were studied only with uroflowmetry. All of them were interviewed about medical and parity history.
RESULTS
The voiding patterns were abnormal and various in fifteen (88%) of the patients, while nineteen (95%) in the control group had normal pattern. Eight of the patients showed the increased EUS activities on EMG, while others did not. There was a higher frequency of normal delivery in the patient group than in the control.
CONCLUSIONS
We suggest that uroflowmetry may be helpful for understanding patients with voiding difficulties, and that further investigation about the treatment of them, based on their voiding patterns, should be needed.
