Abstract
-
The purpose of this paper is to describe a new electronic perinatal record system for the prospective capture of accurate, standardized maternal and neonatal clinical data and provision of annual statistics on all babies born in Korean hospitals. The initial experience gained in the years of planning and operation of this program is also to be summarized. Data are entered by obstetric and pediatric residents, who can easily select the code number from each corresponding data item. Data items were made to be basic and included minimum 49 entries, of which the code was designed to provide the accurate information. The system has been fully operational with no significant problems since May, 2004. It is proposed that obstetricians and pediatricians throughout Korea will be encouraged to use the new form of an electronic perinatal record to improve perinatal surveillance. Its use requires the willing co-operation of doctors of the mother and baby care team.
