Abstract

This study was to evaluate the influencing factors on the result of stereopsis in refractive accommodative esotropia. Subjected to this study were 48 patients with refractive accommodative esotropia who had been followed up over 3 years with no decompensation of deviation angle on glasses. They were divided into two groups, 24 each, the one who had less than 100 seconds of arc (group I) and the others with more than 100 seconds of arc (group II) at the last examination. We compared the average onset age of strabismus, the age at first glasses correction, the period between onset of strabismus and first glass correction, refractive change, absence or presence of amblyopia on first visit to our clinic in both groups. The mean ages at first visit was 3.20 and 3.45 years, and follow-up periods 7.45 and 6.17 years, respectively. The development of accommodative esotropia were 2.13 vs. 3.02 years (p=0.830); the age at first glasses correction age were 2.35 vs. 3.02 years (p=0.082). The periods between onset of strabismus and first glasses correction were 0.22 years in group 1 and 0.81 years in group 2 (p=0.042), differing significantly. It is concluded that in accommodative esotropia the earlier correction with glasses result in the treatment of fine depth perception clearly shown on the long-term follow-up
