Abstract
-
Pelvic organ prolapse is a common and costly affliction of older women. Continued efforts have been made to develop effective surgical techniques and prevent recurrences. Recently the use of synthetic mesh and biologic graft for pelvic reconstructive surgery is increasing more and more in Korea following the global trend, even though the scientific evidence is insufficient. The objective of this review is to examine the role of mesh or graft in pelvic floor surgery. There are few prospective randomized trials that prove the benefit of using mesh or graft in pelvic reconstructive surgeries except abdominal sacrocolpopexy for apical prolapse. In conclusion, recommendation for general use of mesh or graft in pelvic reconstructive surgery is not appropriate at this time.
