The Success Rate of the Microscopical Tubal Reversal of Women in Their Forties
Abstract
OBJECTIVE
To study the success rate and the acceptability of microsurgical tubal reversal as a treatment procedure for infertility in woman ages > or = 40 years.
METHODS
We investigated 51 patients ages > or = 40 years who had undergone microscopical tubal reversal in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Chonbuk National University Hospital from March 1, 1982 to October 28, 1997.
RESULTS
The follow-up rate was 76.5%[39/51] and pregnancy was achieved in 59.0%[23/39]. The mean ages of the pregnant and non-pregnant groups were 41.0+/-0.93[range:40-43] and 42.8+/- 2.86[range:40-49] years, respectively. The mean interval between tubal reversal and pregnancy was 5.96+/-6.2 months. The cumulative pregnancy rate was 46.2% for the first 6 months after tubal reversal, and 53.8% for 18 months.
CONCLUSION
The microscopical reversal of tubal sterilization of women also in their forties should be regarded as an acceptable treatment of infertility in women who are highly motivated and well-counseled and have no other infertility factors.
