Abstract
-
Inflammatory fibroid polyp is an uncommon, localized, nonneoplastic lesion of the gastrointestinal tract. It is composed of fibrous tissue, blood vessels, and numerous inflammatory cells such as eosinophils. It occurs most frequently in the stomach, and secondly in the ileum. It rarely occurs in other organs such as the colon, jejunum, duodenum, and esophagus. Most of patients present with obstructive symptoms, which are different according to the localion of the lesion. Occasionally anemia and gastrointestinal bleeding have been reported, but its etiology still remains obscure. In the cases of inflammatory fibroid polyps in the ileum, most of polyps are solitary lesion, and they usually present as intestinal obstruction or intussusception. It is more frequently observed in women and in the elderly. We report an unusual case of inflammatory fibroid polyp of the ileum causing intussusception. A 46-year-old female presented with abdominal fullness, colicky pain, and vomiting. A contrast-enhanced CT scan of the abdomen showed intussusception of the ileum. The diagnosis of intussusception caused by an inflammatory fibroid polyp was confirmed after surgery.
