Echocardiographic Study in Normal Koreans

Abstract

Since Edler and hertz reported the use of reflected ultrasound for the recording of cardiac motion in 1954, echocardiography has become the most useful non-invasive and highly diagnostic tool for the cardiac diagnosis. There are a lot of published papers about the echocardiographic findings in normal persons outside the country, but we can find a few in normal Koreans and morever many differences between measured values of them. The purpose of this paper is to provide echocardiographic values in normal adult Koreans with no evidence of diseases. Using smith Kline Ekoline 20 and Hitachi EUB-3, authors measured the echocardiographic values according to "The Commottee on M-mode standardization of American Society of Echocardiography". The following results were obtained: 1) Subjects included in this study were 100 healthy adult Koreans with the age range from 20 to 60 years mean age being 36.1+/-11.7 years. 2) In mitral valve measurements, DE amplitude was 22.1+/-2.2mm, EF slope 119.7+/-28.2mm/sec, left ventriculaar outflow tract(LVOT) 33.3+/-5.6mm and E point septal separation(EPSS) 6.0+/-2.1mm. 3) Aortic root dimension(ARD) was 293+/-3.5mm and aortic cusp separation(ACS) was 19.6+/-2.1mm. 4) Left atrial dimension(LAD) was 28.7+/-4.7mm and LAD/ARD was 0.97+/-0.76. 5) On measurements of systolic time interval, left ventricular ejection time(LVET) was 0.30+/-0.03 sec and PEP/LVET was 0.31+/-0.07. PR-AC interval was 0.07+/-0.02sec. 6) Right ventricular internal dimension in diastole(RVIDd) was 14.8+/-6.7mm and right ventricular outflow tract(RVOT) was 20.4+/-5.9mm. 7) In measurements of interventricular septum, thickness of interventricular septum(IVS0 was 11.4+/-1.4mm in systole and 8.3+/-1.6mm in diastole. Amplitude of left septal systolc motion(LSa) was 5.4+/-1.9mm. 8) Left ventricular study showed that left ventricular internal dimension(LVID) was 44.9+/-8.2mm in diastole and 31.0+/-6.5mm in systole. Left ventricular end diastolic volume(LVEDV) was 94.7+/-24.2ml and left ventricular end systolic volume(LVESV) was 39.8+/-20.0ml. Ejection fraction(EF) was 33.1+/-9.2% and stroke volume(SV) was 60.1+/-14.5ml. Fractional shortening(FS) was 33.1+/-9.2%, left ventricular mass(LVmass) 140.3+/-53.9gm and mean velocity of circumferential shortening(Vcf) 1.08+/-0.27 cir/sec. Thickness of left ventricular posterior wall was 7.5+/-1.4mm in diastole and 11.9+/-1.6mm in systole. Amplitude of left ventricular posterior wall motion(ENa) was 10.5+/-2.7mm. Mean endocardial velocity was 42.0+/-11.3mm/sec in systole and 99.2+/-32.0mm/sec in diastole.
