Transvaginal Color Doppler Sonography of the Normal Ovaries According to the Menstrual Cycle

Abstract

PURPOSE: To analyze the resistance index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) of ovarian artery during menstrual cycle with the use of transvaginal color doppler ultrasonography.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
83 volunteers, whose age ranged from 15 to 52 years, were included in this study. Initially, we checked the last menstrual period and classified each phase of ovulation time. All of the 83 volunteers were performed transvaginal ultrasonography and RI and PI of ovary were analyzed by the use of color doppler. From the demonstrated waveform of blood flow was drawn in manual maneuver to calculate the RI and PI.
RESULTS
A few days before the ovulation, the RI and PI of ovary were the highest values as the mean +/- SD (0.62 +/- 0.04, 0.97 +/- 0.04) respectively. Characteristisally, the end diastolic flow was nearly absent or very low in this period. Since than, RI and PI decreased gradually, and finally become the lowest values (0.47+/-0.04, 0.78+/-0.02) of the 20st day of the cycle. And in this period, the high peak systolic and end diastolic flow velocity were noted.
CONCLUSION
Nornal ovary shows physiologically different RI and PI in the course of menstrueal cycle.
