Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare the results of 5 different sensory function tests in intermittent exotropia patients and to evaluate the role of suppression or ARC[anomalous retinal correspondence] in postoperative results. It was an prospective study of 32 patients who were diagnosed intermittent exotropia. Bargolini lens test, major amblyoscope, red filter test, worth-4-dot test and afterimage test were performed before the surgery and they were followed up more than 3 months. The high incidence of suppression or ARC resulted in major amblyoscope, red filter test and worth-4dot test, but incidence of NRC[normal retinal correspondence] was high in Bargolini and afterimage test. The success rate of surgery was low in case of either suppression or ARC revealed in more than 2 tests, but there was no statistically significant difference[p>0.05]. This study showed various results among 5 sensory function tests. Therefore only one test result misled to estimate for sensory function in intermittent exotropia. And whether suppression or ARC exists before surgery is not correlated with post-operative success rate.
