Abstract

This study is to investigate the difference of morphologic parameters of the optic disc and peripapillary atrophy[PPA] between normal-tension glaucoma[NTG] and glaucoma-like disc[GLD]. Topographic measurements for optic disc and zone betaof PPA using Heidelberg Retina Tomograph[HRT, ver. 2.01] were performed on one eye in each of 33 individuals with GLD and one eye in each of 33 individuals with early NTG. All the individuals enrolled were chosen among those who were referred from the routine health checkup to glaucoma clinic due to high cup-to-disc ratio[>0.5] on the disc photographs. GLD had significantly larger disc area, rim area, and rim volume while cup-to-disc area ratio was larger in NTG. All parameters for zone betaindicating the area and extent were significantly larger in NTG than GLD. In conclusion the PPA measurement can provide a useful tool to differentiate NTG from GLD following the first screening by disc photograph in routine health checkup.
