The authors reviewed the charts of 28 patients[28 eyes] who had undergone pars plana vitrectomy for the treatment of intermediate uveitis complicated with vitreous opacity, traction or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, or proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Mean follow-up period was 20.7 months[range; 3~53 months]. Visual acuity improved in 24 eyes[86%], unchanged in 2 eyes[7%], and decreased in 2 eyes[7%]. and final visual acuity was 20/200 or better in 22 eyes[78.6%]. Postoperative complications included cataract[3 eyes] and glaucoma[3 eyes]. Preoperative factors including patient age, sex and duration of disease had no prognostic value, and preoperative treatment, or type of surgery performed had no statistically significant correlation with final visual outcome. Early pars plana vitrectomy may be considered the safe and effective treatment for the intermediate uveitis complicated with neovascularization and traction or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
