Abstract

Canaliculodacryocystorhinostomy was performed in 42 eyes of 31 patients from May 1997 through September 1998 in the Department of Ophthalmology, Yeungnam University, College of Medicine. The length of patent canaliculus was from 7.0 to 14.0 mm[average; 10.8 mm] and intraoperative application of 0.02% mitomycin C to surgical wound was made for 5 minutes in severe stenotic canaliculi. After the follow up period of between 6 and 18 months[average; 9.4 months], the success rate was 93.1%[27 of 29 cases] in the skin approach. In the endonasal approach, 92.3%[12 of 13 cases] of success rate was achieved. The final size of internal ostium in cases with mitomycin, which showed slightly larger than those without mitomycin application group. The final success rate was 95.3% after revision in 1 eye. In conclusion, the authors suggest that this procedure could be suited for common canalicular obstruction or individual canalicular obstruction more than 7 mmaway from the punctum.
