We evaluated retrospectively 24 eyes of 24 patients who had undergone pars plana vitrectomy for removal of intraretinal foreign body [IRFB] at Chonnam University Hospital from January 1994 to January 1998. The majority of patients were adults male [91.7%]. Fifteen eyes had metallic foreign bodies and the other 9 eyes nonmetallic. Associated preoperative findings were traumatic cataract [83.3%], vitreous hemorrhage [41.7%], and retinal detachment [33.3%]. Pars plana vitrectomy was performed in all eyes. These foreign bodies were removed by foreign body forceps or magnet after cutting away the fibrous membrane surrounding foreign body. Twenty-three eyes [95.8%] had undergone pars plana lensectomy, and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation to sulcus. Endophotocoagulation, cryopexy, gas tamponade, and/or scleral bucking procedure were utilized depending upon the retina status. Good visual acuity was obtained when IRFB was less than 2 mmin size, when located in peripheral retina or when intraocular inflammatory reaction was less severe preoperatively. Combining pars plana vitrectomy and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation allowed rapid visual rehabilitation.
