The Effects of Meditation on Stress and Self Efficacy of College Students

Abstract

PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to test the effects of meditation on stress and self efficacy of the college students.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS
The total subjects of this study were 36 college students in K city who were desirous of participating in the meditation program, 16 assigned for the experimental group and 20 for the control group. The data were collected from June 10 to November 30, 1998, and analysed by Fisher's exact test, Wilcoxon rank sum test, Kruskal Wallis test and Spearman's rank correlation analysis using the SAS program.
RESULTS
The results were as follows; 1. The homogeneity of general characteristics in subjects showed no statistically significant difference between two groups. The homogeneity of the score of anxiety, depression and self efficacy of subjects in pretest showed no statistically significant difference between two groups 2. Hypothesis I such as "The experimental group would have more change in the score of anxiety than the control group" was supported. 3. Hypothesis II such as "The experimental group would have more change in the score of depression than the control group" was supported. 4. Hypothesis III such as "The experimental group would have more change in the score of self efficacy than the control group" was not supported. 5. There was a significant relationship among the score of anxiety, depression and self efficacy at post test in the experimental group. 6. There was a significant difference in the score of anxiety, depression and self efficacy according to the degree of perception on the effects of meditation in the daily life. There was a significant difference in the score of anxiety and self efficacy according to the degree of perception on the effects of meditation in scholarly activity and the frequency of training.
CONCLUSIONS
The results suggested that meditation was effective in stress management and strengthening self efficacy in college students.
