Abstract
-
Four cases of the retinal detachment secondary to snail track degeneration which were clinically observed by indirect ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp biomicroscopy and 3-mirror contact lens biomicroscopy among the about 140 cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment were presented in this report. The affected retinal areas of snail track degeneration were seen paralled to the ora serrata at and anterior to the equator within these retinal areas, one or more round atrophic holes have been found in all cases but not horse shoe tears. Biomicroscopic studies of the vitreous revealed the extensive syneresis and simple total posterior vitreous detachment in all cases. The majority of patients were young age. Among them, three(3 eyes) cases were highly myopic but one(2 eyes) cases emmetropic. Good result of visual improvement after surgery and prophylactic photocoagulation or cryothermy for retinal detachment secondary to the snail track degeneration of retina were obtained.
