Clinical and statistical observation was made on 67 inpatient with renal tuberculosis in the department of urology, Hanil hospital, seen during the period from 1962 to 1972. These patients stand for 9.0% of the in-patients with male to female ratio 52. 2%/47. 8%. Age distribution showed that 65. 6% of the cases were in 21 to 40 years of age. Laterlization of the lesion showed right to left ratio of 46.3% to 43.3% and bilateral in 10.4%. Of 50 cases, 32% admitted the hospital in 1-6 months period after onset of symptoms, and 30% in 6 months-1 year period, and 4% after 5 years. The most frequent subjective complaints was frequency 70%, and hematuria 66%, dull ache in flank 60%, painful urination 54%, suprapubic pain 46% in order of their frequency. In 76% of cases, past history or present illness of tuberculosis was noted, of which 44% had pulmonary tuberculosis and 16% pleurisy. By acid-fast stain of urine, tubercle bacilli were demonstrated in 70% of cases. Of blood nitrogen level of 17 patients, over 50% of cases showed normal level, and the highest level was shown by a bilateral renal tuberculosis case. Functional classification of intravenous pyelograms of 43 kidneys revealed delayed visualization 37 2%, normal visualization 32.6% and non-visualization 30. 2%. The classification based on Braasch and Emmett revealed absence of visualization in 30.2%, delayed visualization 37. 2%, poor visualization with one or two 'glob' 27.9%, caliectasis 20.9%. Nephrectomy was performed in 57% of in-patients. Fifteen nephrectomized specimens disclosed diffuse nodular or sclerotic form in 100%, ulcerative type 73. 3%, caseocavernous type 60, 0%, calcification 6.7% and pyonephrotic type in 13.3%.
