BACKGROUND: Biochemical test must be simultaneously performed with Salmonella serogrouping for the accurate identification (ID) of Salmonella because serogrouping of Salmonella have the possibility of cross-reaction the identifiction of Salmonella.
METHODS
Seventy-three Salmonella isolates were obtained from clinical specimens from January 1997 to August 1998 and were tested by Salmonella serogrouping and 10 tube ID system composed of 14 conventional biochemical tests.
RESULTS
All of five S. typhi and S. paratyphi-A were correctly identified as S. typhi and S. paratyphi-A by 10 tube system, respectively. And 67 Salmonella species other than S. typhi and S. paratyphi-A were identified as Salmonella species by 10 tube system.
CONCLUSIONS
10 tube system have been shown to be an accurate, cost-effective alternative to the use of commercial ID system for identification of Salmonella.
