Chronological Change of Patient Reaction to Phychiatric Consultations: Comparison between 1978 and 1998

Abstract
- This study was conducted to examine the changing pattern of patient reaction to psychiatric consultations during past twenty years(1978 and 1998).The response to psychiatric consultation of the 100 consultees in the chonnam University Hospital from January to October, 1998 were investigated for identifying the relation to their age, education, occupation, place of residence, impression about psychiatry and marital status. The compared group were 50 psychiatric consultees in the Chonnam University Hospital during the period from may to October, 1978 examed to use the same methods. The findings are as follows. 1) The accepting and cooperative response in 1998 were increased but neutralized and ambivalent response, and hostile and reject response were decreased to compare those of 1978. 2) The mean age of each responders group in 1978 was 36.1years for the neutralized and ambivalent responders, 31year for accepting and cooperative responder and 29.1years for hostile and reject responders, but in 1998 was 45.3years for the accepting and cooperative responders, 40.7years for the neutralized and ambivalent responders and 37.0years for the hostile and reject responders. 3) The relation between patients reaction and education were not changed during the twenty years. 4) The order of the frequency of their occupation in 1978 was the unemployed and student among the accepting and cooperative responders; the unemployed and farmers among the neutralized and ambivalent responders; officers and salaryman and students among the hostile and reject responders. But that in 1998 was the unemployed, officers and salaryman among both the accepting responders and neutralized responders; unemployed and farmers among the hostile and reject responders respectively. 5) The married state among the accepting and cooperative responders in 1998 were increased to compare those in 1978, but the neutralized and hostile responders were not changed. 6) The city dweller among the accepting responders in 1998 were markedly increased in comparison to those in 1978. 7) The order of frequency relating to their impression about paychiatry in 1978 was "don't know" and positive impression among the accepting and cooperative responders but that in 1998 was positive impression and "don't know" among the accepting and cooperative responders
