Abstract

Hypopituitarism can be casused by various disease. The present study was performed on Korean patients with hypopituitarism and functional pituitary adenoma, who were examined from 1988 to 1997. One hundred twenty eight cases with hypopituitarism and functional pituitary adenoma, which was confirmed by high resolution sella CT scan and combined pituitary stimulation test, were classified based on their primary causes. The results were as follows: 1) Among 128 cases, 74 cases were hypopituitarism, 54 cases were functional pituitary adenoma such as, Acromegaly, Prolactinoma, Cushing's disease. 2) Among 74 cases with hypopituitarism, 43 cases(58.1%) were pituitary tumor, 25 cases(33.8%) were Sheehan's syndrome, 3 cases(4.1%) were apoplexy, 2 cases were idiopathic, 1case was tuberculosis meningitis. 3) Ten out of 18 male patients with hypopituitarism(55.6%) were pituitary adenoma 4) Twenty seven out of 56 female patients with hypopituitarism(47.4%) were pituitary adenoma and 26 cases(45%) were Sheehan's syndrome. 5) Twenty nine out of 54 patients with functional pituitary adenoma (53.7%) were Prolactinoma and 18 cases(33.3%) were Acromegaly, 6 cases(11.1%) were Cushing's disease. In summary, the most common cause of hypopituitarism is pituitary tumor and the most common cause of functional pituitary adenoma is prolactinoma. Microprolactinoma are more common than macroprolactinoma, and Acromegaly is mostly macroadenoma.
