Abstract

Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis is a rare tumor, and this is associated with renal stone, hydronephrosis and pyelonephritis. We report here on a case of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis with a review of the relevant literatures. The patient was a 74 year-old woman who had left giant hydronephrosis with multiple renal stones.

Figure

  • Fig. 1 (A) Large left ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) stone with severe hydronephrosis on the CT scan transverse view. (B) Severe hydronephrosis on the CT scan coronal view.

  • Fig. 2 (A) The renal calyces are dilated and filled with blood or mucin. The kidney shows a hydronephrotic appearance with atrophy and thinning of the parenchyma. Some of the intercalyceal walls are thickened and fibrotic. There are many small mucinous nodules protruding into the calyceal lumina. (B) The tumor cells show elongated, hyperchromatic nuclei and clear cytoplasm due to intracytoplasmic mucin. The tumor cells have proliferated to form two layers in several areas. The glandular structures have a round, smooth contour and the tumor cells do not seem to have invaded the stroma (×100). (C) The inflammatory cells are neutrophils, lymphocytes, macrophages and multinucleated giant cells of the foreign body type (×200).
