PURPOSES: To evaluate the effects of TM (Sterile powder combining, per ml, 17.5 mg of papaverine, 6.3 microgram of prostaglandin E1 [PGE1; alprostadil], and 0.6 mg of phentolamine) on penile erection in the dogs and to compare it with those of Bimix (mixture of papaverine 27.3 mg/ml and phentolamine 0.9 mg/ml), papaverine, and PGE1 (Caverject).
MATERIALS AND METHODS
TM (0.02 ml or 0.03 ml), Bimix (0.02 or 0.03 ml), papaverine (4.8 mg or 7.2mg), and PGE1 (1.6microgram or 2.4microgram) were injected consecutively into the
cavernous tissue of 12 mongrel dogs (12-15Kg). After the action of the first drug had been completed, and at least 30 minutes after the first injection, a second drug was injected. The action of each drug was evaluated by the increase in intracavernous pressure (delta%ICP), the duration of the plateau pressure and the drop in systemic blood pressure.
RESULTS
The delta%ICP was significantly higher(p<0.01) after TM injection than after injection of Bimix, papaverine, or PGE1. There were no differences in the duration of the plateau pressure among the four groups. No significant drop in systemic blood pressure was noted at and dose of TM, Bimix, papaverine, or PGE1.
CONCLUSIONS
TM sterile powder induced penile erection most effectively without causing a significant drop in systemic blood pressure. Therefore, TM con be used for intacavernous injection therapy.
