Malignant Melanoma of the Eye

Abstract

Four cases of malignant melanoma are presented. 2 cases (18 years old man and 22 years old woman) occured in caruncle. which were removed including tumor mass and a case. 43 years old woman was precancerous melanosis diffusely infiltrated in the oulbar and palpebral conjunctiva for which only biopsy was performed. A case of 3 years old girl was malignant melanoma of the uveal tract. In gross finding yellowish tumormass was placed in the ocular cavity and bony like mass was located in the center of the tumor. In microscopic examination the tumor cells were mixed type of the malignant melanoma. In reticulum stain, argyrophil fibers were found in the some portions. Orbital exenteration was performed 35 months later because of recurrence of the tumor after enucleation. 10 months after enucleation she died. We reviewed 12 cases of malignant melanoma occurred in eye and its adnexa reported in Korea and obtained the followings. 1. The primary site of malignant melanoma in eye and its adnexa was 60% in uveal tract. 2. The incidence as prevalent in young age, 3rd to 4th decades (60%) and it was worthy of notice to have high incidence under 5 years of age. 3. Spindle cell type of malignant melanoma in uveal tract predominated.
