Abstract

A psoas compartment block has been used to provide not only anesthesia for orthopedic surgical procedures but also analgesia for postoperative pain. Currently, this block is advocated for relieving pain from various origins in the anterior thigh and lower lumbar area. A 75 year-old women who underwent surgery for spondylolisthesis complained of pain in both thighs and the low lumbar area. Initially, a caudal block was performed but the pain was not relieved. Consequently, a psoas compartment block was performed using 0.5% lidocaine with dexamethasone, which relieved the pain in both the thighs and the low lumbar area. If patients complain of pain in the thigh and low lumbar areas, particularly when an epidural block is not feasible, a psoas compartment block is recommended as a useful and simple method.
