Abstract

The pneumothorax following brachial plexus block by the subclavian perivascular ayproach was observed in 150 patients undergoing orthopedic or plastic hand and forearm surgery. Clinical symtoms of pneumothorax were observed and chest x-ray was taken to observe asymtomatic pneumothorax 24 hours after the block. Asymptomatic pneumothorax was confirmed on chest x-ray in 3 patients (2%), but no treatment was necessary. Other complications included arterial puncture (16%), Horners syndreome (8%), hematoma (1.3%), and no instances of symtomatic phrenic nerve block or recurrent laryngeal nerve block.
