Abstract

Ureterosropy is now an established technique for the management of ureteral calculi. Manipulation of calculi can be done under direct vision using grasping forceps or stone baskets with or without ultrasonic lithotrite. A clinical study of our initial 50 cases of ureteral stone patients using ureteroscopy was performed 0f 54 stone manipulations attempted in 50 patients 36(67 per cent) were successful. Of 31 calculi positioned below the iliac vessel and 31 smaller than 1cm(radiographic longest diameter) 26(84 per cent, and 24(77 per cent), respectively, were removed successfully. There were no significant complications during or after the procedures. We conclude that ureteroscopic removal of stones under direct vision can be done safely and be the first choice among the managements for the surgical ureteral calculi if the patients are selected properly.
