Evaluation of Renal Injuries with Computerized Tomography

Abstract

The diagnosis and appropriate management of patients with renal injury have remained controversial. From July 1982 through June 1965 we evaluated with computerized tomography and/or angiography 35 selected patients suspected of sustaining major renal trauma, and compared computerized tomography with angiography in regard of accuracy, sensitivity and specificity in l5 patients, whose extents of renal injuries were confirmed at operation. Computerized tomography provides the most precise anatomical detail of rental injuries as well as valuable information regarding other retroperitoneal and intraabdominal structures, often resulting in identification of associated and unsuspected injuries. This study suggests that computerized topography is highly sensitive and accurate method to evaluate renal injury, which allows the surgeon to make a confident choice of treatment.
