Abstract
-
Thirty-three cases of transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis which were managed during the period 1965-1975 were reviewed retrospectively. The predominant symptom was hematuria(82%). The most common findings on IVP was a filling defect(66%). A retrograde pyelography was useful when an IVP failed to visualize. Urinary cytology and renal arteriography had limited value. Fourteen of 18 patients with stage I disease survived 5 years(77.8%), while all 7 patients with stage IV disease were dead, with a mean survival of 10.6 months. In 12 of the 33 patients(36.3%) additional urothelial tumors developed elsewhere along the urinary tract. Nephroureterectomy including a cuff of bladder continues to be the treatment of choice.
