A Clinical Observation on the Nephrectomized Patient

A clinical observation on the 120 patients nephrectomized in the Department of Urology, College of Medicine, Hanyang University, during the period from Mar 1972 to April 1980 was presented with a brief review of the literature. The results were as follows: 1. The total number of in-patients during above period was 1,881 and nephrectomies were performed in 120 of the 1,469 total urologic operations (8. 2%). 2. Age distribution showed the highest in 50`s with 20.8%, and the youngest was 2 year and the oldest 70 years. Sex distribution was almost equal. 3. The causative lesions of the kidney showed the highest in tuberculosis 38 cases (31. 6%), kidney 25 cases (20. 8%), tumor 16 cases (13. 4%), injury 12 cases (10. 0%), and chronic pyelonephritis 9 cases (7.6%) by sequence. 4. Subcostal approach was the most frequently used method in 54 cases (45. 0%), lumbar approach with the resection of the with rib was 28 cases (23. 3%). 5. The average amount of transfused whole blood of the transfused patients was 1,933cc in tumor, 1,700cc in injury, and total average amount was 1,113cc. 6. Postoperative complications included 7 cases of wound infection, 3 pneumothorax, 2 paralytic ileus, 1 bleeding. 7. 77 cases (61. 7%) were discharged within 10 days after surgery and only 2 cases(1. 6%) remained more than 1 month.
