Abstract
- Recently, there has been an increase in the use of duplex ultrasonography in the diagnosis of vasculogenic impotence. However, there is a lack of data concerning the findings of this study in normal men. We used the U.S.ATL 5-10MHz linear-array transducer in 35 young Korean adults with normal erections. After intracavernosal injection of 10microgram of PGE1, normal erection occurred in 3-10 min(mean 5.92 min), and from 2 to 35 min after injection, blood flow was observed continuously. Side effects(priapism, penile hematoma) did not occur. The mean cavernosal artery diameter was 0.55+/-0.01mm during the flaccid and 1.16+/-0.1mm during erection. The mean peak systolic flow velocity before injection was 9.48+/-6.75cm/sec. After injection, the greatest value was 49.58+/-29.30cm/sec(at 17 min); thereafer, the values decreased with time. In all 35 cases, the peak systolic flow velocity was >30cm/sec. The mean end- diastolic flow velocity was 0.45+/-1.93cm/sec before injection; 2 min after injection, it had increased to 5.68+/-4.21cm/sec. After this temporary increase, from 7 min on, a gradual decrease was seen. The mean resistance index value before injection was 0.98+/-0.06; 2 min after injection, it was 0.78+/-0.13. A restoration of the value to 1.00+/-1.5 at 7 min was seen after a temporary decrease.
